EMPORIUM – On May 14, the Bureau of Forestry, Elk State Forest, was presented with two flags. These flags were donated by the local American Legion 194 and the local Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 6221.
In December, Marci Mowery, president of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation, reached out to the VFW to see if they could help fulfill the wish for flags from the Forest District’s wish list.
PPFF’s mission is to promote and support the natural and cultural resources of Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests through leadership in recreation, education, conservation and volunteerism.
Shortly after, Barry Sarick contacted Mowery expressing interest, and stated that the believed the American Legion would also be willing to assist.
Sarick presented the request to both groups and flags were purchased and donated to the Elk State Forest.
The flags were presented with the following people in attendance: Dan Bushor, forest maintenance supervisor at Hicks Run Division; Michael Fapore, commander of American Legion 194; Barry Sarick, quarter master of VFW; Marci Mowery, president of PPFF and Dennis McCulla, commander of VFW Post 6221.
