Stephen Jacobson, 90, a resident of Montgomery Care Center, Montgomery, Ohio and formerly of Lanse, died Monday, May 12, 2014 at the center.
Born Oct. 15, 1923 in Grassflat, he was the son of the late George and Elizabeth (Gaylo) Jacobson. On June 21, 1947, he married Annette (Johnson) Jacobson of Lanse at the former Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church (now the Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church), who survives in Montgomery, Ohio.
Also surviving are a daughter Cheryl Deckner and her husband, Georg; a son, Bob Jacobson; and a grandson, Georg Robert Deckner, all of Cincinnati, Ohio.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth and brothers, George, Andrew, John and Emil.
He was a 1941 graduate of Cooper Township High School and a 1950 graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in hotel management and business administration.
He managed the Winfield Scott in Elizabeth, NJ and the Robert Treat in Newark, NJ and resided with his family in Union, NJ before moving back to Lanse. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
A veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps (now the U.S. Air Force), he trained at Hancock Field near Santa Maria, Calif. and served during World War II in the Pacific Theater of operations. He flew a P-38 Lightning with his fighter group “Lightning Lancers.”
He was a member of the 68th Fighter Squadron, the 13th Air Force Division and the 347th Fighter Group. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a first lieutenant. He was interested in hunting and military aircraft and participated in a couple “Fly-In” activities at the Mid-State Airport near Philipsburg.
During earlier years, he looked forward each season to hunting with a brother, nephews and friends in the Grassflat area. He was passionately devoted to the preservation of traditional American values.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Lanse, with the Rev. Matthew Finney officiating. Military honors and burial will follow at Grassflat-Lanse Lutheran Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
