SPRING MILLS — Two Penns Valley runners sprinted to the plate on a two-out Clearfield miscue in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Lady Rams a 2-1 squeaker over the Lady Bison in Mountain League softball action Monday afternoon.
Prior to that play that left both teams 4-9 with 4-7 league records, the Lady Bison’s Rachel Hoffman had the upper hand in a dandy pitching duel with Harley Hess.
Hoffman had limited the Lady Rams to a pair of singles through five innings and was protecting a 1-0 lead when Ashley Struble singled and, with one out, Mikenna Lyons walked to threaten the shutout.
Clearfield kept the tying run at second by turning Elizabeth Brooks’ grounder into a force out at third base but couldn’t make the inning-ending play on an ensuing grounder.
Hoffman struck out five and walked two in the hard-luck loss.
Hess also fanned five but walked none and allowed six hits.
Singles by Devynn Ireland, Taylor Luzier and Sierra Jones produced the Lady Bison run that courtesy runner Justina Gaylor scored in the second inning.
Luzier was the only player with more than one hit.
Hoffman saw her 15-game hitting streak end with Hess retiring her three times.
Clearfield will go to Bradford Tuesday and host Brookville Wednesday in non-league make-up games.
