Joseph P. Matts Jr., 65, of DuBois died Friday, April 25, 2014 at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Shadyside in Pittsburgh.
Born Aug. 20, 1948 in Punxsutawney, he was the son of the late Joseph P. Matts Sr. and Anna M. (Maloney) Matts.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served during the Vietnam War.
On Oct. 5, 1973, he married Sylvia M. (Cilladi) Matts. She survives.
He retired from Brockway Glass after 28 years of service.
He was a member of the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church. He was also a member of the U.S. Air Force Association. He was an avid reader and loved the performing arts.
He is survived by three daughters, Gina M. Gray and her husband, Trent of Hazelton, Jennifer A. Sprague and her husband, Andrew of Olympia, Wash., Kathryn L. Matts and her fiancé, John E. Sharp of DuBois and two sons, Joseph R. Matts of DuBois and Thomas J. Matts and his girlfriend, Elaine Kotzbauer of Yulee, Fla.; a sister, Mary Ellen Matts of Fort Thomas, Ky., three brothers, William Matts of Upper Marlboro, Md. and Francis Matts and Edward Matts, both of Punxsutawney; and five grandchildren, Tommy, Elizabeth, Sandra, Ian, and Sara.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Fr. Thomas Matts and an infant sister.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church with Fr. Daniel Kresinski as celebrant.
Full military honors will be accorded from the church by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard.
Burial will be in St. Tobias Cemetery
