ALLPORT – Scoring the most runs of any inning and game thus far, the Curwensville Area High School baseball team won for the second time this week, beating the Warriors of West Branch on Friday, 9-6.
The victory gives the Tide a season record of 2-5 and a 2-0 Moshannon Valley League mark.
West Branch held a 4-2 margin after three innings only to watch Curwensville plate seven runners in the top half of the fourth frame to bolt out in front 9-4.
Of the seven runs the Golden Tide scored in the fourth, six came with two outs, prompting Curwensville head coach Denny Johns to say afterwards, “As I mentioned earlier this week when we beat Moshannon Valley it is sure nice to see us hit with two outs. And it’s good to see us get those hits with guys in scoring position, which happened in our big fourth inning today.”
Tide senior second baseman Brett Gardner had a big day with two hits and three RBI’s. Gardner smacked a two out, two run home run to left center field in the third to give Curwensville its first two tallies.
Senior Alex Olson had two hits, one being a triple and Jake B. Stiles had a double for one of his two hits.
Kyle Johns and Tyler Mays each had two singles to help the Tide attack.
West Branch was led by Walker Williams with two hits, including a double.
Josh Lannen and Zach McGonigal also picked up two hits each on the afternoon.
Curwensville pitcher Ricky Magnuson picked up the win on the mound to even his record at 1-1.
Johns liked what he saw from Magnuson, commenting, “I was really happy for Ricky (Magnuson). He had runners on base most of the time but found a way to pitch out of a lot of jams and come up with the win.”
Kyle Johns came in for Curwensville in relief in the bottom of the seventh to shut down a late Warrior rally and preserve the win.
The Golden Tide will turn around and host Johnsonburg Saturday at 11 am. The Rams defeated the Tide on Wednesday 3-2.
