CURWENSVILLE – After scoring just three runs in the first three games of the year the Curwensville Area High School baseball team found home plate eight times Monday afternoon in picking up its first win, 8-4, over visiting Moshannon Valley.
Golden Tide head coach Denny Johns had the answer to Curwensville’s success, “It is huge to come up with two out hits, especially the ones that drive in runs. For the first time this year we did that and it was a key factor in us getting the win.”
Curwensville scored the game’s first runs, two, in the bottom of the first, when Kyle Johns led off with a walk and later scored on a Brett Gardner ground out.
Jake B. Stiles, who earlier singled, scored the second run of the frame for the Tide on a two out single by catcher Tyler Mays.
The Black Knights actually took a 3-2 margin going into the bottom of the third inning before the Golden Tide knotted the contest at 3-3 on Johns’ second run of the game.
In the Tide’s third, Johns started it off with a single and then stole second base. Stiles followed with another single sending Johns to third with one out.
Curwensville senior Alex Olson struck out on a pitch in the dirt and on the throw to first to get Olson, Johns came racing home.
The fourth inning was the best of the year thus far for Curwensville, scoring three runs, to take a 6-3 lead after four innings.
Sophomore Noah Strickland led off and singled for the Tide and later would steal second base.
With two outs, Tanner Elensky smacked a single that scored Strickland for Curwensville’s first run in the fourth.
Elensky, who also stole second, then scored on a Johns single, making the score 5-3 in favor of the Tide.
Johns promptly stole second base and then scored on another two out single, compliments of Stiles.
Curwensville would add two insurance runs in the fifth inning.
Stiles had three hits on the day followed by two each from Johns and Elensky to pace the Golden Tide.
Moshannon Valley picked up three hits from junior Cody Marshall in game were there were no extra base hits for either team.
Johns went six innings to pick up his first win of the year.
“It was sure nice to see us finally score some runs for a change,” said coach Johns, “Hopefully this can get us rolling on a positive note. We have three more games this week and perhaps we can get to .500 .”
The Tide (1-4) are on the road Wednesday afternoon, playing at Johnsonburg at 4:15 pm.
