DBC Named as a Top 100 Organization
DUBOIS – The DuBois Business College (DBC) received distinction as a Top 100 Organization for 2013 in the Feb. 21 edition of the Pennsylvania Business Central paper.
There are more than 65,000 organizations in The Pennsylvania Business Central’s 22-county readership area. A wide variety of organizations make up this demographic. Financial companies, educational entities (DBC being one of those), law firms, gas and oil companies and suppliers are just a few of the many organizations represented.
Syktich Named as a PA Business Central Top 100 Business Leader
DUBOIS – Jackie Diehl Syktich, president and chief executive officer of DuBois Business College (DBC), received for a second year an honor as a Top 100 Business Leader of 2013 by Pennsylvania Business Central in its Jan. 24 edition.
Shaw: Superior Court Upholds Spotz Conviction
CLEARFIELD – The Superior Court of Pennsylvania has rendered its decision and affirmed the voluntary manslaughter conviction of Mark Spotz, announced Clearfield County District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr. today.
Testimony Heard in Appeal Hearing for Death Row Inmate
CLEARFIELD – Testimony in an appeal hearing for a death row inmate was heard in Clearfield County Court last week.
Daniel L. Crispell, 43, was convicted of murder, kidnapping, robbery and related charges in June of 1990 and given the death penalty. The charges stem from an October of 1989 incident in which Crispell and Christopher Weatherill abducted Ella M. Brown, 48, at the DuBois Mall. Her body was found a day later in Sandy Township about four miles north of DuBois. She had been stabbed to death. Crispell and Weatherill fled the area and were taken into custody in Arizona.
Fair Schedule Includes Changes in 2014
CLEARFIELD – The 154th Clearfield County Fair will have a few schedule changes from previous years, according to Brenda Morgan, public relations and marketing director.
Harness Racing will be held Sunday through Wednesday. As a result, the Fair Queen contest will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday and the Truck and Tractor Pull will be held Wednesday night, said Morgan.
Deer from Western PA Farm Tests Positive for CWD
HARRISBURG – A Jefferson County deer tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture today, marking the seventh case in a captive or wild deer since 2012.
The five-year-old white-tailed deer died on a Reynoldsville deer farm and tested positive for the disease at the Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory in Harrisburg.
DuBois Area Middle school Receives SupportMusic Merit Award
DUBOIS – The DuBois Area Middle School recently received the SupportMusic Merit Award from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. The DAMS has joined 96 schools across the country to receive the prestigious award this year.
Pennsylvania Records Lowest Number of Traffic Deaths Ever
HARRISBURG – The number of highway deaths on Pennsylvania roads tumbled to a record low last year when 1,208 were recorded, the lowest number since recordkeeping began in 1928, according to PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch.
County Considering Voting Precinct Change
CLEARFIELD – The Board of Elections is currently considering the relocation of Cooper Township’s second voting precinct, announced Dawn Graham, elections director, at yesterday’s Clearfield County Commissioners’ meeting.
UPDATED: Six Students Allegedly Stabbed at Franklin Regional High School
MURRYSVILLE – Several students have been reportedly injured in a stabbing incident at a high school in Westmoreland County, officials said.
WPXI-TV reported at about 8:45 a.m. that Dan Stevens, Westmoreland County emergency management director, said as many as 20 students were injured in the incident.

Murrysville, PA, United States (4E) – A 16-year-old sophomore went on a stabbing spree inside the Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, Pennsylvania on Wednesday injuring 19 people before he was subdued and arrested.
Jury Delivers Split Verdict in Conrad Trial
CLEARFIELD – A jury deliberated for approximately 20 minutes yesterday before finding Keith A. Conrad, 51, of DuBois guilty of theft by failure to make the required disposition of funds. However, the jury found Conrad not guilty of deceptive business practices.
Man Waives Hearing in Arson Case
CLEARFIELD – A Madera man accused of setting a residence on fire twice in the same day waived his right to a preliminary hearing during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.
Nathaniel A. Mostoller, 24, of Madera has been charged with arson; burglary; endangerment of inhabited buildings; reckless burning or exploding; recklessly endangering another person; and criminal mischief. He was originally incarcerated at the CCJ in lieu of $25,000 bail; however, his bail was reduced to $10,000 at the preliminary hearing.
Thompson Legislation to Improve Military Mental Health Evaluations Introduced in Senate
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) introduced the Medical Evaluation Parity for Servicemembers (MEPS) Act.
This is companion legislation to the bill U.S. Reps Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (R-PA) and Tim Ryan (D-OH) introduced on March 27. The bipartisan proposal would require a preliminary mental health assessment for military recruits prior to joining the service.
PSP: Brockway Couple Found with 2 “One-pot” Meth Labs
REYNOLDSVILLE – A Brockway couple has been jailed after police found items associated with the production of methamphetamine in their vehicle on Wednesday, reported the state police at DuBois.
Reynoldsville Borough police located a disabled vehicle at the Uni-Mart store on Main Street in Reynoldsville. Further, police observed paraphernalia inside the vehicle and obtained consent to search it.
Five Victims in School Stabbing Rampage Critical, Attacker Charged with Aggravated Assault

Pittsburg, PA, United States (4E) – Five of 21 students wounded in a student’s stabbing rampage at a Murrysville high school are in critical condition on Thursday as the attacker was charged with 21 counts of aggravated assault.
Jared Boger, 17, was still in life support at noon Thursday and doctors at UPMC Presbyterian described his condition as very critical. He was stabbed with an 8-inch knife that barely missed his heart and aorta, the doctors said Wednesday, after the mass stabbing at the Franklin Regional High School.
HARRISBURG – The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has submitted a white paper to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), urging them to consider state differences and needed flexibility when developing emissions guidelines addressing carbon dioxide (CO2) standards for existing fossil fuel-fired power stations.
Residents Bring Complaints of Street Conditions to Borough Council
CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Council heard several residents of West Hill Street, asking for action on paving this street. Resident Dick Bell said they’d submitted a petition last August, asking to repair the street, but no action has been taken. He said some potholes were recently filled, but the street is in sad condition.
