Bison Beaten 4-1 by Latrobe in Curve Classic

ALTOONA — The Clearfield Area High School baseball team was limited to five hits by a quartet of Latrobe pitchers in a 4-1 consolation round loss at the Altoona Curve Classic on the Peoples Natural Gas Field Saturday afternoon.

Josh Kennedy singled to right field to drive in Josh Sorbera with the Bison run in the second inning. Sorbera scored from second base, after advancing there when Thomas Summers was caught in a rundown on his grounder.

Summers had two of Clearfield’s hits, both doubles. Curtis Collins also had a two-bagger.

Latrobe, a WPIAL Class AAAA team, had scored two runs in the first inning and tacked on two more in the fourth.

Devin Jones was the losing hurler in his first start of the season, giving up five hits and four walks in four innings.

Brandon Orsich mopped up with two scoreless frames. He allowed two hits.

Left-hander Zack Kokoska was the winner, striking out six and yielding just two hits in four innings.

Josh Kolling, Devin Onorato and Alex Powell pitched one inning apiece.

Clearfield (0-5) returns to Mountain League action Monday, with rival Philipsburg-Osceola the opponent for its home opener at the Bison Sports Complex.

Huntingdon (3-3) defeated Bishop Guilfoyle (0-6) 10-3 in the other consolation game.

In the semifinals, unbeaten Central routed Bishop Carroll (2-3) 16-3 in five innings and Hollidaysburg downed Altoona (2-2) 6-3 to advance to Sunday’s championship game, where the Scarlet Dragons knocked off the defending champion Golden Tigers (3-4) 6-1 for their ninth win.
