ST. MARYS – After recent weather conditions had put the softball season on hold for the Curwensville Area High School team for nearly 10 days, the Lady Tide got some extra work in Wednesday against Elk County Catholic. Â The two teams battled for eight innings before the Crusaders could come out on top of a 7-6 decision.
Curwensville Head Coach Allen Leigey anticipated that his team would be seeing perhaps its toughest pitching match of the season in ECC’s Abbey Bauer. Â However, the Lady Tide slapped out 13 hits against Bauer, who failed to record a single strikeout in the contest.
“I was very pleased with the way we hit the ball against Bauer,” said Leigey. Â “She gave last year’s big hitters fits. Â We came out and got to her right away and kept the game close.
“This would have been a big win for the young girls to gain more confidence. Â But, we should be ready to play against anybody after hitting one of the better throwers in the area.”
Curensville got off the bus ready to play as they put three runs on the board in the first inning. Â Singles by Abby Dugo, Alaina Stiles, Nikki Harker and Riley Young along with a bunt sacrifice by Tierra Shope helped shape the top of the first.
ECC bounced back with two runs of their own in the opening frame before the Tide went up 4-2 in the third. Â Harker doubled home Stiles for the fourth run.
Again the hosts followed in the bottom of the third with a single run before taking a lead in the fifth. Â Marissa Heary doubled for the Crusaders to open the bottom of the fifth and went to third on an outfield error. Â Bauer promptly tripled to tie the score at 4-4 and then scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to left field.
In the seventh inning, the Lady Tide refused to go quietly as two runs scored to give the guests a 6-5 advantage. Â Dugo opened the frame with a walk and moved to second on a ground out by Shope. Â Stiles then doubled home Dugo and scored herself when the ball was misplayed in center-field.
The game went into extra innings when Cashmer’s two-out single plated Carli Schneider to knot the game at 6-6 after regulation play.
In the bottom of the eighth, however, the Tide defense broke down as two errors proved costly to allow the winning run to cross the plate and end the contest at 7-6.
Curwensville will be back in action and back on the road Friday afternoon at West Branch for a 3:00 start.
