WEST DECATUR – The Central Intermediate Unit No. 10 held its 15th annual Elementary Interscholastic Reading Competition hosted by Bellefonte Area School District on March 29.
This scholastic quiz competition is open to teams consisting of fourth, fifth and sixth graders in the CIU No. 10 service area. The CIU No. 10 serves public, non-public and charter schools in Centre, Clearfield and Clinton counties.
The Grand Prize winning team was the Bookmark Bandits, coached by Amber Buchanan of the Howard Elementary School in the Bald Eagle Area School District. Of the 35 participating teams, 17 teams qualified for trophy honors.
In addition to the Grand Prize, the following teams placed:
- First Place: Bald Eagle Area School District (one team), Keystone Central School District (three teams), Penns Valley Area School District (one team) and Bellefonte Area School District (two teams).
- Second Place: Our Lady of Victory Catholic School (one team) and Bald Eagle Area School District (two teams).
- Third Place: Bald Eagle Area School District (three teams), Keystone Central School District (one team), St. John the Evangelist Catholic School (one team) and Sugar Valley Rural Charter School (one team).
- Additional teams participating in the event included Harmony Area School District, Moshannon Valley Area School District and Young Scholars of Central PA.
According to Deb Wakefield, CIU No. 10 Reading Competition Coordinator, 490 students participated from the tri-county region. The reading list for the competition includes 40 titles and is distributed before the end of each school year.
This, she said, allows students to begin reading the books over the summer months, which encourages reading 12 months a year. “The competition would not be possible without the cooperation from the hosting school, teachers, parents and volunteers,” said Wakefield.
Next year’s event is scheduled for early spring at Bellefonte Area School District with a date to be determined.
