CLEARFIELD – The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library will celebrate National Library Week from April 13-19. This year’s theme is “Lives Change @Your Library.”
In tandem with the PA Forward | Pennsylvania Libraries, an initiative of the Pennsylvania Library Association, National Library Week highlights the unique role libraries play in people’s lives.
“Today’s libraries can help you discover a new and exciting world,” said Paula Collins, library director. “You can visit your library for computer access, to help with your job search and to obtain accurate health information.
“Or, you can find your own personal oasis at your local library. You can enjoy programs, discover new books or e-books and find ways to connect with your community. We’re constantly changing, so see what awaits you at your local library.”
According to Collins, the Shaw Public Library is very excited to take part in both National Library Week and PA Forward. She noted that, “Libraries are here for the community and its residents. Whatever you seek, the library can help you.”
Each program during National Library Week will highlight the five literacies as part of the PA Forward | Pennsylvania Libraries initiative.
The Friends of the Shaw Public Library will kick off the week-long events with the launch of its annual fundraising campaign. The Friends of the Shaw Public Library sponsors special events, programs and provides financial assistance to the library for technology expenses and general operating costs.
Pennsylvania One Book, Every Young Child will be celebrated is on April 15. Children ages 6 months through 5 years old and their families are encouraged to register for the 10:30 a.m. session or the 1:30 p.m. session. The program is sponsored by the Clearfield Kiwanis organization and features special guest readers, activities and refreshments.
“The library is thankful to be collaborating with the Clearfield Kiwanis on this popular and worthwhile program once again,” said Collins. “The One Book celebration is so important because it highlights the importance of literacy and reading in young people.”
Each family in attendance will receive a copy of the 2014 One Book selection, Stripes of All Types. One family from each session will win a hardcover copy of the book. Registration is limited to 90 families.
In honor of National Bookmobile Day on April 16, the Clearfield County Bookmobile will be in the parking lot of the Shaw Public Library from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Any individual who is interested in viewing the Bookmobile, obtaining a new library card or checking out books may stop by during those hours.
The Shaw Public Library will recognize Support Teen Literature Day on April 17 with a display of young adult books and a prize drawing. All area young adults are encouraged to visit the library to view the young adult titles in the display and on the shelves. Interested young adults 12 to 18 years of age who check out a young adult book on April 17 will be entered into a prize drawing.
The Shaw Public Library urges everyone to visit and explore their facility. The library has seven brand new public access computers available. This exciting new technology is available to anyone with a library card. Additionally, the Susquehanna River Arts Center has a new art show available in the Riverview Room of the library. The artwork on display features students from Clearfield Area High School.
The library is free and open to the public and eager to have community members to stop by during regular business hours. Shaw Public Library is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Fridays from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.
