CLEARFIELD – Fifteen citations were issued during a special School Zone speed enforcement detail in Clearfield Borough. The police department recently teamed up with the Pennsylvania State Police to conduct the detail near the St. Francis Elementary School.
During the one-hour enforcement, which utilized radar from the state police, nine motorists were cited for speeding in a School Zone. Three tickets were issued for seat belt violations.
Additionally, two people were cited for improper turning and one for a vehicle inspection violation.
Pennsylvania law states that the speed limit in established school zones is 15 miles per hour. The reduced speed limit is enforceable during the times listed on official traffic-control signs or when a flashing sign is activated. The 15-mile-per-hour speed limit is in effect until a motorist reaches the “End School Zone” sign.
School zones slow traffic at schools to increase the safety of students as they arrive at and leave school.
The enforcement is part of the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project and is funded by part of PennDOT’s $2.5 million investment of federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Clearfield Borough was awarded an additional grant for this School Zone Special Aggressive Driving Project.
