CLEARFIELD – Clearfield County District Attorney, William A. Shaw Jr. has announced the capture of a wanted fugitive.
Shaw identified the fugitive as Edward Matthew Schmidt Jr., 33, of Patton Street, Clearfield. Schmidt was added to the Clearfield County Fugitive of the Week list on March 17.
On Sept. 26, 2013, Patrolman Elliot Neeper of the Lawrence Township Police Department filed a criminal complaint against Schmidt. He charged Schmidt with theft of leased property and receiving stolen property.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, on Sept. 11, 2013, police received a report about the theft of leased property from a business located on Daisy Street, Clearfield. Upon investigation it was found that Schmidt had leased merchandise from the business but failed to make approximately $472.64 worth of payments for the item. Schmidt failed to return the property to the business and to pay the outstanding balance for the device.
A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Nov. 6, 2013, at which time all charges were held for court. On Feb. 25, Schmidt failed to appear at plea and sentencing court and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Shaw stated that on March 18, deputies from the Clearfield County Sheriff’s Office located Schmidt at a residence on Patton Street, Clearfield. Schmidt is currently lodged in the Clearfield County Jail.
Shaw thanked the Clearfield County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with this case.
