CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Historical Society Board of Directors met on Tuesday night at the Kerr House Museum.
Dennis Shaffner, board president, shared information regarding the development plans for the River Walk, which will impact the society’s property along Front Street.
He also read several letters written to the society, which expressed good memories about articles in the Bulletin, as well as thanks for work done in county cemetery restoration.
It was reported that the society received a matching grant from the Clearfield Revitalization Corp. for work done on the front porch of the Kerr House Museum, and that the society has applied for a grant administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission to help with the museum’s operating budget.
Shaffner also reported on the recent cooperation with the Clearfield Pizza Hut/Wing Street in decorating its new facility with historical memorabilia from the county. Items are on loan to the restaurant for permanent display but remain the property of the society. Board members who have viewed the display have been pleased with the use of the historical items for the public can enjoy.
The society will be featuring a display about Air Mail Service this season. This summer is an anniversary of when Air Mail service began in Clearfield County by All American Airways.
The display will feature pictures and articles relevant to the air mail drops and pickups, which happened in Clearfield County. One of the mail pouches that was dropped off and snagged in flight will be part of the display. It was donated to the society along with another that was given to the Smithsonian, by Raymond Nelson of DuBois.
The Society will be cooperating with a “fly in” set for May 17. Originally, the pickup was done at the Armory landing site in Clearfield and the Oklahoma site in DuBois; however, these sites are no longer viable so the present local airports will be used.
The spring Bulletin will be in the mail soon to the membership. Work on the new William B. Alexander V Research Center will begin this summer with plans to open it in the 2015 season.
The society will open the museum this year on May 4 and be open each Sunday and Thursday during the summer from 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. The public is encouraged to come visit the museum this summer, to peruse its exhibits and visit its bookstore.
Admission is free. Individual memberships are just $10. That membership helps support the preservation of the county’s history and heritage, and the continued activities of the society.
