HYDE – The DuBois Area High School boys basketball team broke open a close game with Clearfield on Monday night late in the third quarter to come away with a 65-49 victory on the Bison home court.
Trailing by double digits several times in the contest, Clearfield pulled to within five points of the Beavers, 37-32, on two Wyatt Westen free throws, with 2:36 remaining in the third eight minutes of action.
Then DuBois outscored Clearfield 28-17 the rest of the way to secure the win, giving the Beavers an 8-4 mark on the 2013-14 campaign.
Clearfield took its only lead of the game, 4-3, with a basket from freshman Will Myers at the 5:58 point of the opening frame only to have the Beavers go on a 10-0 run that led to a 15-8 margin after one quarter.
The Beavers had mostly a double digit bulge much of the second quarter, but Bison Erik Sellers hit a three pointer at the buzzer to end the first half, leaving Clearfield down by nine, 31-22, at the break.
The Bison did outscore DuBois in the third stanza 18-16 to trail by seven going into the final quarter 47-40, but the Beavers owned the fourth with an 18-9 edge to get the double digit victory.
Clearfield head coach Forrest Campman, despite the loss, saw positives, saying, “We’re starting to play better every time out now and the kids are also beginning to enjoy it because it is starting to look like basketball now.”
Campman talked about the overall improvement he sees in his squad at this point of the season, commenting, “Our seniors are competing real well right now and the younger kids are getting better and improving all the time.”
Both teams combined for 49 free throws on the night, with DuBois going 22 of 30 from the line while Clearfield went 13 of 19.
Sellers, a junior, paced the Bison offense with 16 points, seven in the second period.
DuBois junior Beau Shepherd led all scorers with 24 tallies, scoring 12 in the final frame. Senior Hunter Lydick chipped in with 17.
The junior varsity battle went to the Beavers also, by a score of 44-27.
Next up for the Bison (3-10) will be another home game on Wednesday night against the Central Dragons. The Dragons defeated Clearfield earlier this season 55-32. JV action starts at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
