CLEARFIELD – The deadline for PA Waste LLC to respond to deficiencies found within its proposed Camp Hope Run landfill permit application expires today, according to Commissioner Joan Robinson-McMillen.
The state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) had originally granted PA Waste an extension until Nov. 25, 2013. However, the DEP later granted another 30-day extension to PA Waste, which expires today.
In December, the county sent a letter to the DEP requesting that it not grant any further extensions to PA Waste and that it reject the proposed landfill permit application. As of the commissioners’ meeting Tuesday, the county hadn’t heard from the DEP regarding the proposed PA Waste landfill permit application.
The DEP had issued a denial for the proposed Camp Hope Run landfill permit application. However, the state Environmental Hearing Board overturned that denial and returned the proposed landfill permit application back to the DEP for further consideration, said Robinson-McMillen during a previous commissioners’ meeting.
According to her, the DEP had previously detailed numerous deficiencies with PA Waste’s proposed landfill permit application. She said the DEP was particularly concerned with the impact the proposed Camp Hope Run landfill would have on the water table and subsidence beneath it due to a clay mine there. Additionally, she said the DEP had noted PA Waste hadn’t conducted a traffic study.
The commissioners said they are at the DEP’s mercy, as it can grant as many extensions as it wanted to. “We haven’t heard from the DEP. We’ll just have to wait and see, I guess,” said Robinson-McMillen.
