UPDATED: Falls Creek Woman Accused of Jefferson Co. Burglaries
JEFFERSON COUNTY – A 19-year-old Falls Creek woman, Brianna M. Boboige, has been accused of burglarizing the Smithtown Community Church in Washington Township and multiple Falls Creek residences between 12:05 a.m. and 4 a.m. Friday in Jefferson County, reported the state police at DuBois.
Pennsylvanians Urged to Use Caution during Forecasted Extreme Cold Weather
HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Corbett has urged citizens to be prepared for the extreme cold weather forecasted for mid-week.
“With overnight lows expected to range from the negative teens to near zero, Pennsylvania residents in parts of the state will see some of the coldest temperatures in nearly two decades,” Corbett said. “Although we are fortunate that this cold snap will be brief, it is important to know that low temperatures such as those forecasted, combined with bitter cold wind chills will be dangerous.
Grice Family Donation Benefits LT Police
CLEARFIELD – Police Chief Mark Brooks reported to the Lawrence Township Supervisors last night that the department was selected by the Tom and Brenda Grice family for a donation.
Brooks said the Grice family asked that he refrain from announcing the amount. However, he said, it is a very generous donation and extends his personal thanks to the Grice family for their generosity.
Woman Accused of Stealing More than $9K from CCSHDC
CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield woman has been accused of stealing from the Clearfield County Society of Handicapped/Disabled Citizens, according to the Clearfield Borough police.
Julie Bain of Clearfield has been charged with 184 counts of theft by deception. Bain allegedly stole more than $9,000 from the CCSHDC, while she worked there, police said.
Man Accused of Burglary Spree in Clearfield
CLEARFIELD – A 35-year-old Clearfield man, Jason Hand, will face charges for six burglaries, according to the Clearfield Borough police.
LT Supers Re-organize for 2014
CLEARFIELD – During Monday night’s re-organizational meeting, William Lawhead was elected as chairman of the Lawrence Township Board of Supervisors for 2014. Dan Mitchel Sr. was elected vice chairman. Both Mitchell and Ed Brown were appointed to the Roadmaster position.
County to Apply for Keystone Opportunity Funding
CLEARFIELD – Yesterday, the Clearfield County Commissioners approved applying to the state Department of Community & Economic Development (DCED) for Keystone Opportunity Funding.
The county approved applying for $325,000 for senior housing on Leonard Street. It also approved applying for $150,000 for the Coalport Borough flood project.
Salary Board Compromises on Temporary Trainer for Controller’s Office
CLEARFIELD – The creation of a temporary position for an accounts payable trainer sparked deliberations and required several votes before gaining approval at yesterday’s Clearfield County Salary Board meeting.
Six Indiana Deaths Linked to Subzero Weather, Temperature Slowly Rises

Indianapolis, IN, United States (4E) – Six people in Indiana died from exposure to subzero temperatures since Arctic winds blew into the U.S. Midwest and Northeast Monday.
The latest fatality was a 23-year-old Anderson man found in the snow outside his home about 3 p.m. Tuesday. The autopsy result indicates exposure to the elements for 30 or more hours killed the victim, who went outside to shovel snow.
Scarnati Re-Elected to Serve as Senate President Pro Tempore
HARRISBURG – State Sen. Joe Scarnati (R-25) has been sworn in as President Pro Tempore of the Pennsylvania Senate for 2014. This is the eighth time Senate colleagues have elected Scarnati to the third-highest constitutional office in the Commonwealth.
The Honorable Justice Thomas G. Saylor administered the Oath of Office. Following being sworn-in as President Pro Tempore, Scarnati offered remarks on major legislative issues that lie ahead for the Senate in 2014. Scarnati explained that one of the largest tasks this year will be to complete Pennsylvania’s budget.
WJAC-TV: Paterno Lawsuit Against NCAA Will Move Forward

BELLEFONTE – Some claims made by the Joe Paterno family and Penn State University supporters in a lawsuit against the NCAA can proceed to the next phase in court, a judge has ruled.
Senior Judge John Leete, of Potter County, issued his opinion Tuesday. He said that some parts of the legal battle between the Paternos and the NCAA can move to the discovery phase.
County to Address Blighted Properties
CLEARFIELD – At this week’s work session, the Clearfield County Commissioners approved a comprehensive strategy to address blighted properties and an agreement with the Gulotta Group LLC in the amount of $6,000.
The county’s Needs Assessment and Market Study of 2011 identified a need to develop a comprehensive strategy. The study resulted in 32 of its 51 municipalities counting 323 blighted structures, said Lisa Kovalick, community development specialist.
Little League Baseball® Celebrates 75th Anniversary
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT – Little League Baseball®, the world’s largest youth sports organization, has officially launched its Diamond Anniversary year, announcing an exciting slate of programming that celebrates the fundamental values of the program – community, family, friendly competition and relationships that last a lifetime. Little League was founded in 1939, when the first Little League game was played in Williamsport on June 6 of that year.
Judge Cherry Sworn in for Second Term
CLEARFIELD – A courtroom full of people applauded as Judge Paul E. Cherry was sworn in for his second term as a Clearfield County Judge.
Those that came to honor Cherry included family, friends and colleagues. Cherry was sworn in by his brother, Dauphin County Judge John F. Cherry.
Man Waives Hearing in Drug Case
CLEARFIELD – A man accused of possessing heroin waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday during Centralized Court at the Clearfield County Jail.
Albert Michael Stansbury, 64, of Coalport has been charged with manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; intentional possession of a controlled substance by a person not registered; and use/possession of drug paraphernalia.
Vanderbilt’s James Franklin to Accept Penn State Job

University Park, PA, United States (4E Sports) – Vanderbilt’s James Franklin is expected to fill the head coaching vacancy at Penn State, according to sources.
Franklin will replace Bill O’Brien, who left the Nittany Lions after two seasons for the Houston Texans last week.
DUBOIS – The Downtown DuBois Revitalization Group’s Promotions Committee will hold its re-organizational meeting at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Greater DuBois Chamber, located on the second-floor of the First Commonwealth Bank on the corner of Long Avenue and Brady Street.
Council Members Commend Emergency Services Team
CLEARFIELD – At last night’s borough committee meeting, Clearfield Fire Chief Todd Kling gave praise to the community’s emergency response team.
He reported that 30 borough firefighters reported for the recent fire at the Clearfield Bowling Lanes on West Second Avenue, Clearfield. Kling said the firefighters’ actions kept the fire damage limited. He noted the department was assisted by borough police and by Lawrence Township Fire Department, but that Clearfield Fire Department handled the fire. He said he commends their local emergency services team.
Meth Lab Found in Brookville Garage
BROOKVILLE – Three people were jailed Thursday after a methamphetamine lab was found in a garage at a Brookville residence, reported the state police at DuBois.
On Aug. 21, 2013, the Pennsylvania State Police Troop C Vice Unit and members of the Jefferson County Drug Task Force initiated an investigation into the distribution of methamphetamine in the Brookville area. The investigation revealed that Michael and April Novak of Brookville and Dean Paige of Blacklick were manufacturing methamphetamine throughout Jefferson County.
