PUNXSUTAWNEY – Captain Bernard J. Petrovsky, commanding officer, Troop C, Punxsutawney, has advised drivers to use caution and common sense while traveling throughout the Commonwealth over the New Year’s holiday.
Due to many celebrating the New Year, he said people lose focus on the importance of safety. He asked people to be responsible for the safety of others and themselves during their travels.
The average person, Petrovsky said, can metabolize one standard alcoholic drink per hour. One standard alcoholic drink, he said, is defined as one 12-ounce beer, one five-ounce glass of wine or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits.
“The only thing that will decrease your blood alcohol content is time,” he said. “Drinking strong coffee, exercising and taking a cold shower will not help your BAC.”
Nationally, Petrovsky said that an average of 28 people die from alcohol-related accidents each day. In the United States, he said well over 200 children die each year at the hands of a drunk driver and typically half of those are riding with one.
When the New Year’s celebration is over, he said people need to remember to make the decision about how to safely get home.
