HYDE – Although not a very tall team, the Bald Eagle Area (BEA) High School boys basketball team makes up for lack of height with quickness, team work, hustle and balanced scoring.
All of that was on display at Clearfield High School Wednesday night as the Eagles remained unbeaten (3-0) with an 89-57 victory over the host Bison.
Six Eagles hit for double digits in the balanced scoring effort – Jason Jones and Trey Butterworth with 16 each, Jeffrey Bennett 14, Bryce Greene 12 and Bryan Greene and Brandon Gettig with 10 apiece.
BEA put on somewhat of an offensive clinic in the second quarter, racking up 37 points. A total not often seen in high school hoops. The Eagles had six three-pointers in the second eight minutes and 11 on the evening.
Clearfield, which trailed the Eagles at the half 60-25, did outscore BEA in the final 16 minutes, 32-29, had three players with double figures.
The mercy rule went into play in the later stages of the third quarter as the Eagles pushed the margin over the Bison by 40.
Erik Sellers lead the Bison with 13, while Christian Lezzer and Will Myers both had 10. It was the first varsity start for the freshman Myers.
Both squads had fairly good nights at the free throw line, with Bald Eagle Area going 14 of 19 and Clearfield hitting on 11 of 15.
The Clearfield junior varsity squad won the opening game of the evening with a convincing win, 52-10, over the young Eagles.
The Bison are on the road for a Friday contest at Bellefonte with the junior varsity game tipping off at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
