CLEARFIELD – At Monday night’s meeting, the Clearfield school board received an update regarding a vandalism incident that occurred at the Girard-Goshen Elementary School in September.
The cost for clean-up and repairs identified in the district’s initial claim totaled $27,872.07. After that it was discovered damage to ceilings, carpeting and a window hadn’t been addressed, said Business Administrator Sam Maney.
The district was responsible for a $2,500 deductible. It has received a reimbursement check from its insurance for the balance, or $25,372.07. Additionally, the cost for the clean-up and repairs to the ceilings, carpeting and window totaled $3,076.69 and will be paid by insurance, said Maney.
According to him, suspects broke into the school and took different types of copper piping. The copper piping, he said, was recovered by the state police. The suspects, he said, were apprehended the same day of the vandalism.
When asked, Maney said the insurance company intends to go after restitution. However, he said it will be a “long, grueling process” based upon the investigation and the suspects.
Girard-Goshen was constructed in 2002 but was temporarily closed in October of 2010 due to structural issues with its roof. The school board subsequently voted to permanently close the school in June of 2012.
