RIDGWAY – The state police at Ridgway would like to warn area residents of recent scams that have involved individuals who are posing as court employees.
These individuals are contacting residents and advising them that they’ve been selected for jury duty. They are also advising some residents that they haven’t reported to jury duty as directed, state police said.
According to the state police, the individuals attempt to verify the names of residents, as well as their social security numbers. They also request credit card information. If residents decline to provide the information, they are threatened with fines.
Judicial employees do not contact residents by telephone to seek personal information, such as social security numbers, birth dates and credit card information. If a resident receives these calls, they should not provide any information and hang up, state police said.
“This is an attempt to steal or to use your identity,” state police said. If a resident has already been contacted and provided information, state police suggest they monitor their bank accounts and credit reports and contact their local police department.
