Dr. Donald M. Casteel, 85, of Clearfield died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 13, 1928 in Trauger, a son of the late J. Marshall and Nora (Riley) Casteel.
Dr. Casteel received his Doctor of Chiropractic in 1951 from the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He was a well-known chiropractor in Clearfield who equally loved his work and patients. He referred many young men and women into the profession, including three sons and seven of his grandchildren.
Dr. Casteel had many interests, including being a horseman and a wrangler. He also had a passion for motorcycling, teaching many family members to enjoy riding. He also loved snowmobiling with his family and was among the first active snowmobilists in the Clearfield area, a place which he so adored.
He also loved traveling with his wife in the family RV, especially their trips to Florida. He will be remembered for his interest in hunting, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates, Penn State football and listening to the Clearfield Bison football games on the radio.
He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Clearfield and the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Association. He was a 50-year member of the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge No. 314, Clearfield, and the Clearfield American Legion John Lewis Shade Post No. 6. He served the country as a corporal with the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Zaneth (McGiffin) Casteel, whom he wed Aug. 16, 1949 and with whom he just celebrated being married 64 years; five children, Karen Miller and her husband, Dennis, Donna Collins and her husband, Marty and Dr. Mark B. Casteel and his wife, Kerri of Clearfield, Dr. Gary M. Casteel and his wife, Vickie of Curwensville and Dr. Scott B. Casteel and his wife, Melessa of DuBois; 12 grandchildren, Brent Miller, Kurt Miller and his wife, Kelsey, Ryan and Aaron Collins, Dr.’s Keely, Joel and Ian Casteel, Kathleen, Dr. Coulton and Gavin Casteel and Palmer and Chloe Casteel; and a brother-in-law, Wilmer McGiffin and his wife, Jane of Mount Pleasant.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Dr. Josh Casteel, Martin Collins II and Jedd Collins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Clearfield, with the Rev. Penney Rahm officiating. Burial will be in the Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde.
Military honors will be accorded at church by the members of the Clearfield VFW and American Legion Posts’ Honor Guards.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Monday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield, and from 10 a.m. until the hour of services Tuesday at the church.
