Oktoberfest to be held Saturday in Curwensville

CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Community Center will host its first-ever Oktoberfest Family Festival this Saturday.

The festivities begin with a morning 5K run/walk. Its registration will be held from 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.; the race will follow at 9 a.m.

Festival activities will begin at 1 p.m. with an array of food vendors with offerings, such as hot sausage hoagies, hot dogs and kraut, funnel cakes, steak hoagies, fries, pumpkin ice cream and Starr Hill wine tasting and sales.

Festivalgoers are also welcome to test their skills at the pumpkin decorating contest, family games of one-legged and egg relays, a bean bag toss or a pie eating contest.  All offer prizes.

For the tiny tots, there will be small games to entertain, creative storytelling and even some good ole helium balloons and face painting. These will keep the children busy while the adults browse popular books from Jamie Sue Wilsoncroft, area artisan booths with wood crafts, furniture, candle makers, merchant raffles and gift basket drawings to benefit special causes, such as Orphans of the Storm.

In addition to the great food and fun, the more serious shopper can partake in the center’s featured live auction with host auctioneer Pat Errigo, starting at 1 p.m.  Unlike your eBay shopping experience, the bidding wars will be live for collectors of antiques, memorabilia or you may just get lucky and cross off your list an early holiday gift item for a loved one.   Some of the favorites are the original “Curwensville Harold” newspapers (1936-42), 9 Forum Publications (1925-27) and 31 The Public Publications (1916), an antique Christmas tin with marbles, a wicket suitcase with a hand-carved handle, movie posters and so much more from then until now when they are yours for the taking.

The Curwensville Community Center’s festival has something for everyone. Even for those who would like a quieter relaxed atmosphere, join others enjoying the authentic Oktoberfest dinner and sipping their favorite Starr Hill wine.

The center doors will open to a bedazzled hall at 6 p.m. with a catered dinner between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. You can bring your date, your family or a few best friends to relax to the melodies of Eric Koval and his acoustic guitar.

Dinner will start with German favorite recipes of potato soup, mouth-watering pork roast, Spätzle and red cabbage or a choice of sauerkraut and dumplings as your side dishes.  All prepared by area caterers at Place of the Rocks Roadhouse.  The OKtoberfest fireworks finale will be at 9 p.m. alongside the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.
