In 2012, the snowmobile bridge over Naval Hollow, which connects Naval Hollow Road to Straight Creek Road, was inspected and was deemed unsafe.
Shortly afterward, the St. Mary’s Snowmobile Association, which originally installed the bridge, removed the rotten wooden decking to prevent any further crossing.
In the meantime, the Bureau of Forestry, Elk State Forest, received funding from the snowmobile fund (monies from snowmobile registrations) to purchase a new bridge for the same location.
The staff installed the footers for the new bridge with the assistance of the St. Mary’s Snowmobile club members and other volunteers. They have also constructed the bridge with plenty of time for the upcoming 2013-14 snowmobile season.
