Clearfield — The Clearfield Area High School boys and girls cross country teams each picked up a pair of wins when they hosted Mountain League foes Tyrone and Bald Eagle Area on Tuesday.
The girls raised their season record to 6-2 with identical 19-44 scores. The boys now stand at 5-3 after clipping Tyrone 26-31 and easily defeating BEA 19-42.
Alec Freeman and Claire Miksell were, once again, Clearfield’s top finishers as they both won tight races.
Clearfield Head Coach John Jacob was pleased with his team’s performance, “We had a great night as a team coming away with two wins and seeing individual times starting to drop. The night started with one of the most exciting races of the year. Claire Mikesell caught Jordan Wiser at the one mile mark and the two state qualifiers battled all the way to the finish line. The lead traded back and forth, until Claire finally pulled away over the last 50 meters. Claire really put together a complete race that was capped off by an impressive win tonight.
“Emily Aveni, Hunter Gathagan, Nikki Chew, Becca Glenny, Emily Hoover and Kristi Fox were able to beat all but the top runners from both Bald Eagle and Tyrone. This group of runners is starting to drop their times as we approach the end of the season. With one more meet to go before the championships, Coach (Todd) Winters and I are looking forward to seeing this group start and peak and see how well the girls can come together as a team.
“Not to be out done, Alec Freeman battled BEA’s top runner to the line and was able to come away with a one second victory. Alec also had a very complete race and showed real determination to regain the lead and outsprint Zach Moody to the finish line.
“As a team we finished behind the Tyrone boys in two invitational meets this year. But tonight all of our boys were able to pick up some key places to get the upset win. Logan Gilbert, Jacob Ryan, Josiah McClarren, Shane Graham and Kyle Thompson all moved up one place. These five boys gave us the points we needed to come away with the five point team victory.”
The Bison will host Penns Valley on Monday October 1 in their dual meet of the season.
