CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Historical Society held its monthly board meeting Tuesday at the museum building.
It was reported that the society has received a matching grant from Clearfield Revitalization Corp. for help with the continuing refurbishing of the museum facility. A new porch roof is being re-applied over the front entry to the museum with a decorative railing, which will match the banisters on the porch. This will bring the building back to its original appearance and be painted to match the Victorian paint scheme. The board recognized the support of the CRC and thanked them for helping with the project.
Additionally, the society recently acquired a new Richard Burfoot painting for display. Burfoot was a painter who resided in the county and who was known for his portraits and landscapes. His studio is located in Luthersburg where he resided at the time of his death.
A recent acquisition of portraits for Thomas H. and Jenny Reighard Murray was also announced during the meeting. Thomas Holt Murray had a distinguished career as an attorney and had been a member of the Clearfield County Bar for 46 years at the time of his death. He was known to have been a renowned public speaker. He was a historian and served as the first president of the Clearfield County Historical Society beginning in 1910.
A workday is planned for this Saturday at Knox to put a roof on the new blacksmith’s shop and to clean up the grounds for this year’s Fall Festival. Any interested workers are invited to show up from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. to help with this effort. The ninth annual Fall Festival is planned for Oct. 13. The public is encouraged to attend.
The society’s annual dinner is set for Oct. 24 and will take place at St. Timothy Church Social Center in Curwensville. The evening begins with hors d’oeuvres at 6 p.m. with wine from Bee Kind Winery. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. with the program to follow. This year the speaker will be Luther Gette whose topic will be When the Railroad Reached Clearfield County – bringing with it a rich profusion of corporate and political shenanigans.Â
Reservations can be made for the evening by contacting the society at 104 E. Pine St., Clearfield. Cost for the evening is $25 per person. The evening is being sponsored by CNB bank and R.J. Corman Railroad in memory of Richard Jay Corman (1955-2013).
A new web page has been developed and the public and membership are encouraged to visit it as well as the society’s Facebook page to keep up-to-date on the activities of the society. New memberships are always welcome and the bookstore is a great place to find gifts for special occasions.
