Michael J. Slother, 88, of Philipsburg died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013 at his home.
He was the son of the late John and Julia Ann (Tekely) Slother born Nov. 2, 1924. He married the former Shirley Lou Wood on Dec. 10, 1947 in Philipsburg. She preceded him in death on Sept. 5, 2012.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Philipsburg. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant. He was also a Bronze Star recipient.
He was employed all of his life in the coal industry, retiring from the Stott Coal Company of Philipsburg. Because of his service in World War II, he was presented with his high school diploma from the Philipsburg-Osceola Area High School.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Peter, John, Edward, Albert, Steve and Ben Slother and four sisters, Mildred Slother, Elsie Archer, Frances Web and Agnes Dixon.
He is survived by two brothers, Thomas Slother of Florida and Ted Slother of Pleasantville. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 4, at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home in Philipsburg, with the Rev. Brenda K. Leigey  officiating. Burial will be at the Philipsburg Cemetery in Philipsburg.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
