DUBOIS – At Monday night’s meeting, the DuBois City Council received an update about the recent flooding from Fire Chief Lou Emerick.
The fire department had 119 volunteers who assisted during the flooding and who responded to 100 to 110 calls for assistance within 12 hours, he said. But he noted it’s difficult to determine exact figures, while they responded to one call and received requests from others at the same time.
According to him, boat teams assisted from Treasure Lake, Sandy Township, Curwensville and Clarion and rescued 51 people from the flood waters. He said 110 people stayed overnight at the American Red Cross shelter that opened at the DuBois Area High School.
The ARC currently has 200 outstanding requests for aid as a result of the flood, said Emerick.
In other business, the council discussed its options so far as the Dollar General building that caught fire in March of 2012.
“We get calls all the time. It’s starting to smell. There’s mold in there,” said City Manager John “Herm” Suplizio. He said it would cost an estimated $100,000 to demolish the building.
Lisa Kovalick, the county’s Community Development Specialist, shared her discussions with the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development about freeing up $70,000 toward the demolition of the building.
