HOFFNER GETS 170th CAREER LATE MODEL WIN AT AMP
CLEARFIELD – Luke Hoffner won the Randy Sterling Trucking Late Model feature Saturday night at America’s Motorsports Park in Clearfield and in doing so earned his 170th career Late Model feature win. Joining Hoffner in victory lane was Jon Lee of Mahaffey in the Quigley’s Pub Pure Stocks and Josh Frantz of DuBois in the Clearfield County Metals Four Cylinder main event, both drivers grabbed their career first AMP wins.
Repeat winners included: Denny Fenton of Clearfield in the Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub Semi Lates and Tim Fannin of Ridgway in the Harter and Son’s Garage Street Stocks.
The Late Models hit the speedway with Bill Davis and Justin Kanouff on the front row, with Davis taking the lead and setting the early pace. While he led, Kanouff sat second, but the fans were also eyeing ninth place starter Luke Hoffner, who was headed to the front. On lap seven, Hoffner took second from Kanouff and started to reel in Davis, but Davis could not hold off the challenge, as Hoffner dove to the inside off the second turn and took the lead coming out of turn four. Once he had the top spot, Hoffner continued to victory lane for the second straight week and the 170th time in a Late Model. Davis was second with Dan Gill third, Denny Fenton fourth and Kanouff fifth. Heat wins went to Davis and Kanouff.
The Semi Lates were slim again, as the new division has cars being built, but not finished as of yet. The race was led flag to flag by Denny Fenton over his cousin Dylan Fenton. As they exited the final turn on the final lap, head flagman Allen Luzier went to the track surface and waved the double checkers there rather than the flag stand. Chad Desmett was third. Denny Fenton won the heat.
The Street Stocks were led to the line by Paul Blake and Tom Slack and the 20-lapper never saw the 20th lap, as the high attrition race ended as the time ran out before they could make the entire 20 laps. Blake was setting the pace in the feature early on with Slack in second and Tim Fannin third, but a caution on lap five saw both Blake and Slack pull out the feature due to mechanical problems, giving the lead over to Fannin, who now had to contend with Kyle Shannon. Shannon and Doug Tibbens jockeyed for second for several laps, before Tibbens began to fade, allowing Shannon to battle for the lead with Fannin, but the time expired before Shannon could try all of his tricks, plus he was trying to hold off Jamie Price in the later stages, but couldn’t do that either. The official top five were: Fannin, Price, Shannon, Dustin Challingsworth and Tibbens. Heat wins went to Price and Shannon.
George Bailey and Jim Challingsworth brought the Pure Stocks to the green flag with third place Jon Lee leading the first lap. Bailey was in second with Justin Queen in third. On lap two Queen took second and set his sights on Lee, with Bailey still in third. Meanwhile Jarrett Walker was headed to the front in the Hunter McCracken #37, as the race wore on a caution on lap 10 regrouped the field, as Lee got high off the second turn, Queen went under him with Walker in the lowest lane, making a three wide battle for the lead, but Lee was able to recover and took the lead, as Walker took second away from Queen. At the line the top five were Lee, Walker, Queen, Bailey and Ben Krause. Heat wins went to Lee and Queen.
The Four Cylinders had the makings of an excellent race, and while the majority of the race was just that, the end results in the pits always put a damper on things. Stephanie Ivory beat Robert Lydic off the line to lead early on, with Stephanie Lucas in second and fifth place Josh Frantz headed towards the front. Frantz took the lead on lap six, dropping Ivory to second. She battled back, as her and Frantz traded paint a number of times, then the two tangled exiting turn two, sending Ivory into the infield. She sat there until the caution waved, thus, ending up at the rear. This allowed Frantz to hold Lucas off the rest of the way for his first ever win at AMP. Lucas was second, Jesse Short was third, Bryan Warren was fourth and Mike Lucas was fifth. Heat wins went to Stephanie Lucas and Lydic.
AMP NOTES: There were a total of 60 cars in the pits, including 10 Late Models, 3 Semi Lates, 16 Street Stocks, 13 Pure Stocks and 18 4 Cylinders….A moment of silence was observed for Mitch Miller and Jason Leffler, both drivers who were killed in racing accidents last week…Coming up this Saturday is another five-division AMPED up show, including Late Models, Semi Lates, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and Four Cylinders…Gates open at 3 with race time set for 6:30 p.m…Coming up on July 3 is a special appearance by the 410 Sprints. The 30 lap event will pay $3,000 to win and $300 to start.
