For the second straight year, Spanish students from the Clearfield Area High School participated in the Spanish Culture Bowl on May 17 at Penn State Dubois.
The students took first and second place in nearly every category. With a score of 92 points, Clearfield placed first in the overall school position. DuBois finished second with 65.5 points.
The Culture Bowl Team consisted of Jacob Ryan, Leah Robertson, McKenna Aleksivich and Katie Powers and earned first place. Clearfield’s skit team placed second and consisted of Romina Zunino, Rachel Hoffman, Taylor Stott, Matt Bell, Patrick Barnes and Stephen Carns.
There were also many individual awards.
In the geography competition, Shannon Reinke placed third. In the poetry reading competition in level one, Becky Glenny and Amanda Olah tied for first; in level two, Chase Wise was first and Jerica Maines was third; in level three, Derek Reigel was third; in level four, Romina Zunino was first and Leah Robertson was second. Alyssa Ambold and Jerica Maines were second in the poster contest.
In the reading comprehension competition, in level one, Arianne Good was first, Sarah Hazel was second and Janelle Wallace was third. In level two, Lauren Conrad and Sarah Lash were tied for second and Jacob Ryan and Anna Brower tied for third. In level three, Shannon Reinke was first and Yesh Patel, Matt Bell and Megan Shugarts were tied for second and Jordan Lehman was third. In level four, Romino Zunino and Vince Kovach were tied for first and Corey Root took second.
In the vocabulary recognition competition in level one, Dariann Pastelok was first, Sabbatha Forcey was second and Lauren Butler was third. In level two, Hannah Kirsch was first and Carly Weed and Maggie Sopic tied for second and Jilli Neeper was third. In level three, Jon Stephens was first, Matt McKenzie was second and Jordan Gilbert was third. In level four, Jessica Shomo was first and Amber Scott and Connor Renaud were tied for second and Kaylee Muhollan and Derek Reigel were tied for third.
The International Idol was “one last great victory for Clearfield.” Matt McKenzie and Chase Wise tied for first; Jordan Gilbert, Carly Colavecchi and Emily Ammerman finished in second.
