CLEARFIELD – Lost pets are finding hope at the Clearfield County SPCA thanks in part to a grant from the Clearfield County Charitable Foundation.
Recently the foundation presented the SPCA with a grant for $1,000, which was used to help complete the animal control room in their new building near the Clearfield County Jail. The new drop off kennel has already proven to help lost pets be reunited with their owners.
In March, state police found a terrier mix female, which was an older dog, in Houtzdale. She was taken to the new drop off kennel where she found a dry, warm place with fresh water and food. This dog, Baby, was later reunited with her owner.
In another happy story, during a weekend two dogs were found by the state police of Clearfield, which took them to the drop off kennel. On Monday morning, the owner called the SPCA and was relieved to find her two dogs were safe.
SPCA President Pam Smith explained the animal control officers and police have access to the room 24 hours per day and can leave animals in cages supplied with food and water. Previously officers were reluctant to pick up strays because they didn’t have any place to take them.
Incorporated in 1972, the Clearfield County SPCA is one of the last remaining truly open door animal shelters. It operates solely on donations, receive no government funds and have no parent organization for funding or support.
Due to the immense generosity of Tim and Margie Lanager, a new 9,000-square foot shelter in Lawrence Township became possible with construction beginning in April of 2012. The organization is always in need of funding and is grateful to the CCCF for the $1,000 grant.
The grant came from money held by the foundation in its Community Fund. This fund represents an endowment established for the specific purpose of making grants to worthwhile projects benefiting Clearfield County communities. The fund was established and continues to grow from contributions received from individuals, organizations and businesses. The foundation accepts donations to the Community Fund at any time during the year.
Established in 2004, the Clearfield County Charitable Foundation is one of more than 300 community foundations in the United States, and its purpose is to enhance the quality of life in Clearfield County through the support of services that promote health, education, social welfare, public and urban affairs, arts and culture, conservation and the environment.
