CLEARFIELD – PennDOT and some Clearfield County safety partners will team up in June to educate children on the importance of bicycle safety.
The Clearfield Borough Police Department and the Clearfield County Sheriff’s Office, with cooperation from PennDOT, will host a free bicycle rodeo for children at the Clearfield County Fairgrounds in Clearfield on June 15. The event will start at 9 a.m. and conclude by 12 p.m.
Volunteers will provide bicycle helmet fitting and bicycle safety inspections. Participants will also have the opportunity to test their riding ability in a skills course. There is no charge to take part in the rodeo; however, boxes will be placed at the rodeo site for collection of non-perishable food items to be distributed to local food pantries.
Children who are participating in the rodeo should arrive at the bicycle rodeo with a parent or guardian. All participants should bring a bicycle and their helmet, if possible. Pennsylvania law requires that children under the age of 12 wear an approved bicycle helmet.
According to PennDOT’s 2012 accident statistics, 1,373 accidents occurred that involved a bicycle. Sixteen people were killed in those accidents.
