CLEARFIELD – The state prison sentence of a two-time bank robber was discussed during Tuesday’s motions court in Clearfield County.
In April, Kevin Bundy, 22, pleaded guilty to robbery, criminal conspiracy, terroristic threats and simple assault in two cases. He was sentenced by Judge Paul Cherry to a total of 10 years to 30 years in state prison. This sentence will run consecutive to any other sentences.
His attorney, Douglas Campbell, told Cherry that he didn’t think his intention was for Bundy to serve the entire 30 years but because the robberies were committed with a gun, Bundy would not be eligible for parole. He asked the judge to alter his five to 15 years sentence on each of the robberies to five to 10 year sentences. Another option would be to run the sentences concurrent to a Jefferson County sentence for which he is serving a 42-month to seven years sentence for a probation violation.
“He is a young kid who made a terrible mistake,” Campbell said.
Bundy sent a letter to the court stating that he realizes what happened to the victims would stay with them the rest of their lives. If he was not on drugs, he never would have committed these crimes. Now that he is clean and sober “I feel like myself” he wrote. He stated he would like to make himself a better person.
First Assistant District Attorney Beau Grove told the judge that he felt what Bundy received was appropriate and noted he could have gotten an 80-year maximum sentence.
Cherry noted that one of the victims quit her job because of the emotional trauma of the crime. He denied the motion.
According to a previous Courier-Express article, Bundy and his co-defendant, Michele A. Garvey, 24, both of 1150 Woodbury Rd., Brockway, committed two armed robberies of the S&T Bank on West Scribner Avenue in DuBois, an armed robbery at Cash For Gold in Sandy Township and two thefts at Your Jewelry Box at the DuBois Mall.
The first armed bank robbery occurred on Dec. 31. When police arrived three witnesses were visibly shaken and crying. They said the robber was dressed in black with a black ski mask and carried a black hand gun. The employee who waited on the robber said he pointed the gun at her and asked for $50 and $100 bills. She said she was scared and gave him an unknown amount of money from her drawer. All of the employees said they were scared for their lives.
It was later determined the robber had gotten away with $900.
On Jan. 4, police received a call that the bank had been robbed again by the same man. The employee who waited on him said he pointed the gun at her and said “give me.” She told him her drawer wasn’t being used and then reached for another drawer to pull out the bait money. He yelled “no” at her and then took off running.
Bundy and Garvey then went on to rob the Cash For Gold store in the K-mart Plaza.
Police received a tip from a concerned woman who told them Bundy had possibly committed the robberies. She said he and his girlfriend, Garvey, were getting into trouble and Garvey was recently placed in the Jefferson County Jail.
Police then spoke with Garvey at the jail on Jan. 16. She admitted to being involved with both robberies. Bundy who was also incarcerated at that time in the Jefferson County Jail, also admitted to the robberies. He said he had a toy pistol and used the money to buy heroin.
Bundy also pleaded guilty in two retail theft cases from his actions at a jewelry store.
Garvey pleaded guilty in April to the robberies and theft. She is serving two to 10 years in state prison, which will run consecutive to her sentence of 42 months to seven years for a Jefferson County probation violation.
