CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Historical Society Board of Directors conducted its monthly planning meeting Tuesday at the museum building.
President Denny Shaffner thanked Sneath Fire Safety for checking and recharging the fires extinguishers in the museum and carriage house. He also thanked Gayle Gearhart, Helen Abrino and Carol Walker, who performed a historical recreation for a community organization and donated their performance stipend to the society.
Cathy Larson, membership chairperson, reported that the society has 727 members.
The genealogy committee reported the placement of a new sign for the Harmony Chapel Cemetery in Chest Township. The committee will continue to look at small county cemeteries that need to be identified and recoded.
The publications committee reported progress on John Bard’s “History of the Old Bucktails.” Illustrations have been decided upon, and the slow process of editing is continuing. The board hopes to have it available in the fall, and believes it will be a wonderful read for Civil War enthusiasts.
The society’s maple syrup display at the Curwensville High School’s “Logs to Lumber” event was well-received, and visited by more than 1,000 students.
Plans are being made for an entry in this year’s Clearfield County Fair Parade. The entry will center on the county’s hunting heritage.
Plans are also being made to construct a blacksmith shop at the Bloody Knox site. A work day is scheduled for the site on July 21. There will be three bays, one to use as a blacksmith shop, one for display and one to be a roll-out bay to allow the public to view the craft inside.
The public is reminded that the museum is open each Thursday and Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will be closed July 4 for Independence Day, October 13for the fall festival at Bloody Know and October 24, the day of its annual dinner.
