CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Area School District Board of Directors awarded the construction contracts for the renovation and expansion of the ClearfieldElementary School at Monday night’s combined committee and board meeting.
The bids were awarded as follows: general construction, R.T. Contracting, $6,533,000; HVAC construction, Pinnacle Plumbing & Heating Inc., $1,028,000; plumbing construction, Pinnacle Plumbing & Heating Inc., $427,200; electrical construction, G.M. McCrossin Inc., $1,951,500; and food service equipment, Commercial Appliance Contracts Inc., $362,766.
In April, the board decided to rebid the electrical construction for the CES project, which came in much higher than expected. As a result, the board put the other contracts on hold until it could review the new electrical contracts on Monday night.
According to a previous GantDaily.com report, Architect J. Greer Hayden of HHSDR Architects/Engineers of Sharon reviewed the low bids and alternatives for the CES construction contracts at April’s committee meetings. At that time, he suggested the board consider rejecting the bids for the electrical contract, which came in $600,000 higher than the original estimated cost of $1.2 million.
Construction is expected to begin June 17 at the CES, according to Hayden.
In other business related to the district’s buildings, the board voted to:
- approve the administration and architect to prepare and submit for approval to the state’s Department of Education PlanCon Part F, Attachment C, Post-Bid Opening Notification for the additions and alterations to the CES project.
- approve appointing John Dunlevy of Sharon as the construction administrator for the CES project.
- approve appointing Hess and Fisher Engineers for the soil testing and inspection services for the CES project as per their proposal in the amount of $12,154.
- approve appointing WAE Balancing Inc. for the HVAC commissioning agent for the CES project in the amount of $36,050.
- approve the submission of PlanCon Part G, “Project Accounting Based on Bids,” for the CES project to the PDE for review and approval.
- approve the submission of PlanCon Part H, “Project Financing,” for the CES project to PDE for review and approval.
- approve the submission of PlanCon Part H, “Project Financing,” for the ClearfieldAreaHigh School renovation and expansion project to the PDE for review and approval. The high school project is expected to be completed sometime next summer.
- approve the release and settlement agreement with Keymark Enterprises LLC, which had a small role in the design of the roof at the Girard-GoshenElementary School. Keymark Enterprises LLC must pay $10,000 to the district.
Board member Larry Putt, who served as president for the meeting, said this wasn’t a settlement of any of the other claims the district has pending against any other defendants in this lawsuit or any of the related lawsuits. In addition, he said this was not a release of any other claims that the district has pending against any other defendant in this lawsuit or any of the related lawsuits.
The board had to temporarily close Girard-Goshen due to structural issues with its roof in October of 2010. Then, it permanently closed the school as part of its plan to consolidate the district’s students into two buildings in June of 2012.
