BIGLER – Welcome spring and celebrate Mother’s Day at the Walker Gardens of Bigler.
Attend tours for the public on Mother’s Day, on May 12, and May 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. View thousands of tulips in bloom accompanied by daffodils, hyacinths and a cast thousands of others adorning 10 landscaped acres.
The Walker Gardens is located just off U.S. Route 322 between Philipsburg and Clearfield. The gardens are periodically opened for public tours by Ray Walker, of Bigler, owner and developer of the gardens.
All proceeds from the openings benefit of Bigler area charities.
Admission to the gardens is $3 for adults; $2 for those 12 to 18 and $1 for those under 12.
Visitors will have the opportunity to walk along quiet pathways opening to vistas of ponds and waterfall. Swans may be seen on the ponds. Plumed peacocks roam the grounds.
There are bridges of stone and of birch. There is a water wheel and an old mill nestled among the flowering trees and shrubs.
There is a variety of statues, including one of St. Frances overlooking the entry into the gardens.
Free musical entertainment will be offered in the gardens on each Sunday afternoon. There will also be the Garden of Eden display including apples and Eve and the Tree of Life.
Refreshments will be available through volunteers from the Bigler, Dale and Shiloh Charges, which are members of the Bigler area charities. The menu includes bean soup, sauerkraut and hot dogs, meatball sandwiches, hamburgers and drinks as well as baked goods.
Free parking is available with directional signs from the Bigler intersection on U.S. Route 322 to the parking area.
Members of the Bigler area charities assisting with and benefiting from the public tours of the gardens include the Bigler Area YMCA, the Bigler, Dale and Shiloh Charges of the United Methodist Church, the boy scout and girl scout troops of Bigler and the Youth Hobby Club.
Walker Gardens are convenient to access from major highways in Clearfield County including Interstate 80 at Woodland. Those traveling on U.S. Route 322 will find the gardens midway between Philipsburg and Clearfield. Drive to the Bigler traffic light on U.S. Route 322 and follow the directional signs.
