Elk County Catholic Tops Golden Tide 6-1

CURWENSVILLE – Scoring one run in each of the first six innings, the Elk County Catholic (ECC) high school baseball team improved to 11-3 on the 2013 season with a 6-1 win over Curwensville on Monday afternoon on the Golden Tide’s home field.

On April 10, ECC defeated the Golden Tide 1-0 in St. Marys.

Curwensville picked up its only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning as Jake Stiles scored on a two out single to left center field by Brad Coudriet.  Stiles had singled to right center earlier in the inning.

Curwensville head coach Denny Johns said afterwards, “We had some opportunities in the game but just couldn’t find a way to capitalize on them.  We seem to find a way to lose.”

Hunter McCracken led off the bottom of the second with a double to left field but was later erased on a double play, taking the Tide out of any scoring possibility.

The Tide also squandered an opportunity in the bottom of the sixth inning when Brett Gardner and Jason Bloom started things off with back to back singles only to come up with another zero on the board.

Gardner lead the Tide with two hits, including a double.

Elk County Catholic got three hits from catcher Vince Jacobs and two from Ivan Wortman.  Jacobs, Brock McCullough and Jonathon Dippold each had a double for the Crusaders.  McCullough had three RBI’s on the afternoon.

Johns closed with, “It’s just more of the same for us.  They’re (Elk County Catholic) a good ball club, but for the most part we were right with them.”

The Tide, now 3-11, are back in action on Tuesday at home against Glendale in a Moshannon Valley League (MVL) contest starting at 4:15 pm.  Curwensville is currently 1-1 in the MVL.
