Detour will be in place
STATE COLLEGE, On behalf of Gov. Tom Corbett, PennDOT has announced that work to replace a bridge near Coburn on Route 2011 (Penn Street/Coburn Road) will get under way May 13. Once work is complete, PennDOT will be able to remove the bridge from the list of structurally deficient bridges in Centre County. Replacement will also provide area drivers with safer, more efficient travel across a modern structure.
Weather permitting, work will begin May 13, when PennDOT closes the bridge and puts an official detour in place. The 14-mile detour will use Route 2018 (Woodward Cave Road) and Route 45.
The bridge spans Elk Creek between the villages of Coburn and Millheim in Penn Township. The bridge was built in 1937, is 80 feet long and carries an average of 730 vehicles each day.
Work is expected to last through early December and includes replacement of the old bridge with a new concrete box beam bridge, approach work, paving, guide rail updates, and miscellaneous items. Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. of State College is the contractor for this $1.2 million job.
Drivers are reminded to obey posted speed limits and always buckle up.
