BELLEFONTE – PennDOT’s continued work to preserve bridges on Interstate 80 in Centre County will require some lane closures on the highway this week.
PennDOT’s work zone encompasses the eastbound and westbound bridges that span Route 26 at the Bellefonte/161 interchange, the bridges spanning Route 1010 (Hubler Ridge Road) at mile-marker 165 and the bridges spanning township Road 476 near mile-marker 167.
Drivers will encounter restrictions as follows:
• The travel (right) lanes will be closed on I-80 eastbound and westbound near mile-marker 161 Monday and Tuesday;
• The travel (right) lanes on I-80 eastbound and westbound will be closed near mile-marker 165 Monday;
• The passing (left) lanes on I-80 eastbound and westbound will be closed near mile-marker 167 Monday;
• Short-term, daylight lane closures will be in effect on Route 26 near the I-80 bridges throughout the week. Depending on traffic volumes and time of day, drivers may wish to choose alternate routes to avoid delays. Flaggers will control an alternating traffic pattern through the area and drivers need to remain alert for changing conditions.
This work is a continuation of preservation work on six bridges that began in the summer of 2012. Three of the six bridges had been declared structurally deficient. When the work is finished in mid-May, those bridges will be removed from the structurally deficient list. Preserving and repairing all six bridges also extends the serviceable life of each bridge for decades.
Through May 14, work will include epoxy painting of the existing concrete on the pier columns, caps and fascia beams. HRI Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $3.4 million project.
