Kane Tops Visiting Golden Tide 9-5

KANE – It was payback time for the Kane Area High School baseball team on Thursday afternoon as the Wolves defeated the visiting Curwensville Golden Tide, 9-5.

The Tide had won the previous meeting between the two schools, 11-1, on April 8.

Curwensville scored a run in the top of the third as Jordan Russell reached on an error, stole second base and then scored on an RBI single by Jake B. Stiles to rightfield with one out.

Another miscue by the Wolves helped the Tide pick up its second run in the top of  fifth as Tanner Elensky made it to first base thanks to the Kane error.

Stiles followed with a single, giving the Golden Tide base runners on first and second with no outs.

With one out, Elensky stole third base and then scored on a fielder’s choice, making the score, at that time, 7-2 in favor of the Wolves.

The Tide had its biggest inning in the top of the seventh, scoring three more runs, but not enough to overtake Kane on this day.

Stiles reached base on another Kane error and scored on a double by Brett Gardner to right center field.

Alex Olson followed with a base on balls giving Curwensville runners at first and second with no outs.

Gardner would cross home plate on a single by Ricky Magnuson to center field and Olson, with one out, scored on a  sacrifice fly by Brad Coudriet to end the scoring for the Tide.

Stiles and Gardner each had two hits for Curwensville; while Jeff Kocjancic had two for Kane.

Curwensville head coach Denny Johns commented after the game, saying, “It is the little things that seem to come back and get us.  We know, however; that we have to come back on Friday and be ready to play Glendale.”

The Golden Tide will play their third Moshannon Valley League (MVL) game of the week on Friday when they host the Vikings of Glendale with the first pitch set for 4:15 pm.  Curwensville is 1-1 in MVL action thus far this year and 3-10 overall.
