CURWENSVILLE – Any fears of a let down by the Curwensville Area High School softball team after dropping a tough game with Elk County Catholic on Tuesday were quickly put out of mind Thursday evening as the Lady Tide beat up on DuBois Central Catholic 11-1.  Curwensville had beaten  the Lady Cardinals 14-2 in a make-up game just last Saturday.
“I told the girls that we didn’t want to let them hang around and gain confidence,” said head coach Allen Leigey. Â “They played Elk County tough on Monday (DCC lost 6-3), and after they (ECC) shut us out on Tuesday, I was afraid they would gain some confidence. Â The girls put up three runs in the first to set things up.”
The hosts waisted little time grabbing the early advantage as lead off hitter Sarah Wriglesworth opened the bottom of the first with an infield single.  Wriglesworth scampered to second on the play as the throw to first went wide, and then moved to third on a passed ball.  Taylor Goodman promptly brought her teammate home on a sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 lead after two batters.  Singles from Cheyenne Pentz and Abby Johnson sandwiched around a walk to Tiffany Carter led to the second run, and Abby Dugo drove home a run for a 3-0 start with a two-out RBI single.
Curwensville (9-2) didn’t settle for the first inning output as they posted a five-run mark in the second. Â Providing the firepower for the frame were Goodman, Pentz, Johnson and Alaina Stiles while Wriglesworth reached on an error and Carter walked again.
“They pitched around Tiff (Carter) all night after she hit a monster homer on Saturday,” Leigey said. Â “The rest of the bats picked her up though and provided more than enough spark. Â This should set us up well for tomorrow’s (Friday) game.”
The rest of the runs in the contest also came from the strong top of the order. Â In the third inning, Goodman tripled and scored on a Pentz single.
In the fifth inning Wriglesworth singled, Goodman doubled and Pentz singled to drive them both in, which ended the game with the 10-run rule.
Goodman and Pentz ended the game with three hits each while Wriglesworth and Johnson posted two. Â Pentz and Johnson plated three RBI’s apiece with Goodman and Dugo also helping with sacrifices on the evening.
“These girls have really bonded as a team,” Leigey smiled. Â “They work hard together and don’t really care who gets the acclaim as long as we grab the win.”
Curwensville turned in a strong defensive game as well. Â The Tide turned two double-plays in the game – their firsts of the season and backed a solid effort from pitcher Tierra Shope.
Shope allowed just one hit in the game – it was a hit by Sarah McNally that broke up both the shutout and no-hitter. Â Four Cardinals struck out and only two walks were issued. Â McNally was the only runner permitted past second, and only one ball off of the visitor’s bats left the infield.
“I can live with two walks a game,” said Leigey. Â “That limits the opportunities to manufacture runs, and the way the defense has shaped up, we can be competitive with anyone. Â When Tierra keeps us in the game in the circle, we have enough sticks to put some runs up.”
The Lady Tide look to stay competitive on Friday as they travel to Punxsutawney.
