“Early grade literacy is so important in a child’s life and development,” said Clearfield Area United Way President Ranea Brewer. So in celebrating the “Week of the Young Child,” 200 children’s books were donated this week to the Sneaker Closet in Clearfield by the United Way Reading Ripples Project.
This week, in particular, was established in 1971 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) to focus public attention on the needs of young children and families and to recognize the early childhood programs/services that meet those needs.
Pictured are Brewer, Sneaker Closet Volunteer Coordinator Shirley Magnuson and Pastor Penny Rahm. Brewer said, “There are over 1,400 local United Ways and many are celebrating in various ways this week.
“Thanks to area college students, lightly used reading material has been collected for Reading Ripples and is being given to families in need.”
Magnuson explained that the Sneaker Closet originated about eight years ago by volunteers to help low-income families with young people, birth to 18. They are given new shoes, socks, etc. and books, when available. It normally operates two Saturdays each month and is closed June and July.
