CLEARFIELD – Two inmates are facing charges in a drug-smuggling case at the Clearfield County Jail, according to District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr. Shaw identified the defendants as Denny Lee Daub Jr., 24, of Schofield Street, Curwensville, and Christopher Scott Irwin, 24, of South 14th Street, Reynoldsville.
On April 10, Sgt. Greg S. Neeper of the Clearfield Borough Police Department filed a criminal complaint, charging Daub with controlled substance contraband to confined persons prohibited, possession of controlled substance contraband by inmate prohibited; possession with the intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance. Irwin has been charged with possession of controlled substance contraband by inmate prohibited and possession of a controlled substance.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, on April 3, the Clearfield Borough Police Department was requested to assist the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General and the Clearfield County Drug Task Force in investigating a report from prison administrators that controlled substances were being brought into and distributed at the CCJ. Upon investigation, it was found that Daub had smuggled suboxone into the jail via a body cavity when he reported April 2. It was also found that Daub had distributed the suboxone to Irwin, who was another inmate at the jail. Jail officials located a small, white plastic bottle containing two suboxone strips in Daub’s cell.
On April 10, Daub and Irwin were arraigned with their bail being set at $50,000 and $25,000, respectively. Both have preliminary hearings scheduled for Wednesday.
Shaw stated this type of behavior is completely unacceptable and every effort is being made to identify those who attempt to introduce drugs into correctional institutions. Shaw also stated that he was pleased with the efforts by the Clearfield Borough Police Department and the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General, to identify and investigate this type of unlawful activity.
