STATE COLLEGE – On behalf of Gov. Tom Corbett, PennDOT has announced that work to construct a mile-long bike and pedestrian trail in Howard Borough will begin April 15.
The completed path will enhance community cohesion as it provides bicyclists and pedestrians access to the Howard Military Memorial, Howard Fire Company and the Howard Elementary School. The path also passes through Howard Central Park.
The path will be a 10-foot wide paved trail along the old Penn Railroad bed from the borough’s West End Park on Spearing Street to the east end of Howard Borough at Beck’s Lane. Planters, trees, and trash/waste containers will be placed at strategic locations along the trail.
Work will include excavating, clearing, and paving approximately one mile of the old Penn Railroad bed. The path will serve residents of Howard Borough, as well as visitors to the borough and Bald Eagle State Park.
Minimal traffic impacts are expected. Roadway flagging will be performed when required. Advance warning signs will be in place where the trail crosses the roadway. The path crosses Rothrock Street, Hogan Lane, and Route 26 (Walnut Street). Signage and striping will be installed for a cross walk on Route 26.
Overall work is expected to last through mid-June. Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. of State College is the contractor for this $252,000 Centre County job.
