Clearfield boys and Girls Track Teams Split with Central Mountain

LOCK HAVEN — The Clearfield boys track team upped their record to 2-1 on the young season with a narrow victory that came down to the last event; while the girls team dropped to 2-1 with a loss to the Lady Wildcats.

Head coach John Jacob discussed how his boys team was able to nip the host Wildcats, “The key to our track team has been our relays. The distance team of Jon Soult, Jon Sponsler, Kenton Climie and Alec Freeman set the tone by giving us a 5-point lead going into the track events. Then our 4×100 relay of Tyler Stratton, Dylan Graham, Rico Longoria and Ethan Tkacik then gave us another five points. This set up the final showdown in the 4×400 relay. I told the guys,’this was going to be the difference between a win or a loss for the team today’. They put it all on the line, holding off a late surge from the Central Mountain boys to seal the win for the boys team. It was great to see the whole team running from one side of the field to the other as each leg of the relay expanded the lead. Dylan Grahm set the tone by getting us off to a three or four second lead, then Ethan Tkacik and Tyler Stratton both added to the lead and Kenton Clime ran an excellent last leg to hold off Central Mountain’s strongest runner.”

Despite the loss on the girls side, Coach Jacob noted the improvement over last years’ result, “Last year the girls lost to Central Mountain by over 40 points. So to come within 10 points of achieving a victory is a huge improvement. I am looking forward to seeing how the girls can respond when we run against Penns Valley and Bald Eagle on Tuesday.”

As noted, the next dual meet is a tri-meet at Wingate on Tuesday April 9 versus the host Lady Eagles and Penns Valley. Some members of the team will also compete at the annual Igloo meet in Altoona on Saturday April 6.
