STATE COLLEGE – On behalf of Gov. Tom Corbett, PennDOT has announced that work to replace a bridge on Route 45 near the village of Millheim will get under way Tuesday. Once work is complete, PennDOT will be able to remove the bridge from the list of structurally deficient bridges in Centre County and provide area drivers with safer, more efficient travel across a modern structure.
Weather permitting; work on the bridge will start Tuesday under an alternating traffic pattern, with flaggers present in the work zone. On Thursday, the eastbound lane will be closed and temporary traffic signals will enforce an alternating traffic pattern. Once work in the eastbound lane is complete, the westbound lane will be closed and traffic will take turns on the repaired side.
The bridge spans Elk Run, about one mile west of the village of Millheim in Penn Township. The Millheim Bridge was built in 1924, is 10 feet long and carries an average of 5,400 vehicles each day.
Work is expected to last through mid-September and includes replacement of the old bridge with a new reinforced box culvert, approach work, paving, guide rail updates, and miscellaneous items. Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. of State College is the contractor for this $476,000 job.
Drivers are reminded to obey posted speed limits and always buckle up.
