KANE – For the Curwensville Area High School girls basketball team the third time wasn’t the charm going up against the Lady Wolves of Kane.
This time it was the District-9 AA playoffs where Curwensville came up on the short end, 46-32.
The Lady Wolves, the number one seed, beat the Lady Tide twice during the regular season, 59-31 on their home floor, and then at Curwensville, 40-35.
And the Lady Tide put a fight on this cold, windy, wintry night even after a disastrous third quarter.
The Lady Tide took an 8-4 first quarter lead on sophomore Ciara Strickland’s second three-pointer of the opening eight minutes before Kane went on a 13-0 run that lasted from approximately four minutes left in the first until 3:10 was left in the second frame.
The drought that the Lady Tide struggled through for over seven minutes of game action was ended on a bucket by senior Katrina Seaburn, leaving Curwensville down 17-10.
Curwensville did cut the margin to 19-14 at the intermission and it looked as though it could stay with the Wolves the next 16 minutes.
Kane leading scorer and team leader, Kaila Jamerson, went down mid-way through the first quarter with an ankle injury and immediately went to the locker room to receive treatment.
Jamerson would return with three minutes remaining in the first half and was used sparingly the remainder of the contest.
Seven Lady Wolves added tallies to the scoreboard in the third quarter when Kane outscored the Tide 20-5 to open up a 20-point bulge after three, 39-19.
Some other night the Lady Tide may have folded the chairs and gone home, but not this night.
Curwensville found it within itself to put up 13 fourth quarter points, while holding the Lady Wolves to seven to make a game out of it until the end.
Lady Tide head coach Rusty McCracken after his best season, said, “Kane tried to slow things down tonight and that’s when we started to run a little, which kept us in the game for the most part. We did wear down a bit at the end, but we never backed away with our effort.”
Then McCracken finished with, “This was a great experience tonight for the entire squad. And we have to look at everything that we accomplished this season. It was a good stepping stone for the future.”
Seaburn paced the Lady Tide with nine points, while being a beast on the boards with 18 rebounds. Strickland added eight points to help out her teammate.
Sophomore point guard Heather Thorp dished out eight assists on the evening, sending her over the 100 mark and ending the year with 106 for Curwensville.
Audrey Perry had 12 points to lead the Lady Wolves.
The Lady Tide end the 2012-13 season with a 9-15 record and say good-bye to seniors Rebecca Johnson, Tiffany Carter, Bailey Dale, and Seaburn.
Kane, with a record of 20-5, will face Redbank Valley, 14-9, in the semifinals on Friday at Clarion Area High School at 7 pm. Redbank Valley defeated Moniteau in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night, 57-54.
The other semi-final game will be played Thursday evening at 6 pm between Brookville, 11-12, and Cranberry, 15-8, at Clarion University.
In the quarterfinals, Brookville upset the number two seed Karns City, 46-37, while Cranberry knocked off Clarion-Limestone 43-29.
