HARERISBURG – State Rep. Tommy Sankey (R-Clearfield) has received his committee assignments for the 2013-14 session of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. The freshman legislator is appointed to serve on the House Commerce, Environmental Resources and Energy, Local Government, and Children and Youth committees.
“We submit our committee preferences, which are based on areas of expertise and interest or issues which pertain to our particular district,” Sankey said. “I’m anxious to get to work in committee, as it is at this level legislation gets voted for consideration by the full House.”
The Commerce Committee originates legislation and oversees implementation of programs which affect Pennsylvania companies. It has primary jurisdiction over state business assistance programs for business formation and expansion, and deals with complaints regarding loans, credit cards, securities fraud, or other accounts with state-or federally-regulated businesses and institutions.
The Environmental Resources and Energy Committee is responsible for legislative oversight of more than 45 different environmental laws in place in the Commonwealth, administered by both the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). It deals with issues such as municipal recycling laws, water and air quality, the Marcellus shale natural gas formation and storm water management.
The Local Government Committee works on many issues with both the Finance and Urban Affairs committees. It oversees municipal codes, pensions and police departments, as well as boundary changes and assessment laws.
The Children and Youth Committee works with the House Judiciary Committee, as well as the state Department of Public Welfare and Office of Children, Youth and Families, to oversee child day care programs and adoption and foster care cases.
