DUBOIS — A scoring drought that began in the first quarter and lasted through halftime proved too much for the Curwensville Area High School boys basketball team to overcome Friday night, and DuBois Central Catholic held on for a 35-29 victory.
The Allegheny Mountain League South Division loss left the Golden Tide still searching for its first win after seven games.
“We just couldn’t put the ball in the basket,” coach Shane Pentz said. “We shot 23 percent.”
The Golden Tide’s shooting wasn’t even that good in the first half, when the Cardinals wiped out a 5-0 deficit with a tough half-court defense that was instrumental in a 23-4 run going into intermission.
Curwensville was outscored 13-2 in the second period.
“That’s probably the most ball pressure we’ve seen so far,” Pentz said. “They tried to double-team quite a bit out of it, and we had some turnovers. It just took us too long to adjust to their speed.
“We did much better in the second half. We started to press and got some steals out of it.”
Curwensville rallied to cut the DuBois Central Catholic lead to three points with a minute left.
“We had chances down the stretch, but DuBois Central came up with the big plays,” Pentz said. “We just keep coming up short.”
Tanner Elensky paced the Golden Tide with a game-high 12 points.
Dane Aucker netted 10 points, including a pair of treys, for the Cardinals, who’ve rebounded from an 0-3 start to even their record at 4-4.
In the prelim, the Golden Tide jayvees dropped a 41-31 decision. They were led by Trey Rauckhorst’s nine points.
Curwensville’s schedule doesn’t get any easier next week with a home game against AML-North Division leader Johnsonburg (8-1) Tuesday and a Moshannon Valley League road rematch with Glendale the next night. The Vikings wiped out a 16-point deficit to edge the Golden Tide 57-53 Wednesday night.
