CLEARFIELD COUNTY – Small Business Saturday was first celebrated in 2010 to honor Mom and Pop stores in the community.
“You get that personal touch. You know grandma’s old recipe or a toy that someone hasn’t seen in a while. It’s all available as opposed to say a big store with a pre-packaged toy,” said Joan Hockman of Hockman Candy in downtown DuBois.
Hockman appreciates Small Business Saturday, because it’s’ not only a big boost for her store, but it also brings people to that hometown feel of a small business.
“You get that friendly home feel when people come in to talk to you,” she said.
Other small business employees agree.
“I think they get more one-on-one and a more personal experience in a small business. I mean if you walk into a bigger store, you might not get that attention,” said Robin Filler, a manager at Miller Brothers Furniture in Punxsutawney, which has been in business for 43 years.
Both women agreed that small business do not only provide great customer service, but they can also do wonders for the local economy.
And they said Small Business Saturday is a great compliment during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.
